About St. Louis
Founded by French fur trappers and traders in the 1700s, St. Louis, Missouri, is a large Midwestern city near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The city itself is bordered by four rivers that have shaped its history and landscape.
St. Louis is most famous for its giant landmark, the Gateway Arch. Completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch is 630 feet tall and dominates the city skyline.
The city has hosted two World's Fairs and the 1904 Olympic Games. The park where the 1904 World's Fair was held is now Forest Park, a 1,293-acre wooded landscape featuring the St. Louis Zoo, Missouri History Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, and St. Louis Science Center, all free to the public. Today, the park is host to the annual Great Balloon Race each Fall.
The city has a light rail system called the MetroLink that links some of the city's neighborhoods and landmarks. From the MetroLink stop in Clayton, you can travel to Forest Park and downtown to the City Museum (a giant indoor/outdoor playground for all ages), Gateway Arch, Union Station, and the Delmar Loop (a hip shopping district full of sushi restaurants and, of course, the comic shop StarClipper). Other St. Louis attractions include the Magic House (a children's museum) and the Missouri Botanical Gardens, where the annual Japanese Festival and Chinese Festival are held in September and April respectively. If you're the sports fan-type, St. Louis is host to the Cardinals baseball team, the Rams football team, and the Blues hockey team.
For fanboys and fangirls, St. Louis is a great place to live (or visit). Besides StarClipper, there is a great chain of comic book stores called The Fantasy Shop which holds a bi-monthly back issue sale. There are tons of conventions including Archon, a science fiction and fantasy convention that was host to the NASFiC in 2007, and Steamposium, a new steampunk-themed convention to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In November, the city will play host to Kawa Kon's new yaoi and shounen-ai convention: Bishie Con!
